PETA Urges Ex-President Carter To STOP Fishing

Capitalizing on an opportunity to gain some publicity for their Fishing Hurts Program, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has recently sent a letter to former President Carter pleading with him to denounce fishing as a cruel sport.   The PETA web site says:

“During an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, President Carter described being hooked in the face during a recent fishing trip… Now that he has experienced the agony of being hooked in the face, we hope that President Carter will make his next foray into the great outdoors without any deadly weapons.”

Deadly weapons??   Since when did a barbed hook become a deadly weapon?   I suppose if the fisherman isn’t diligent about getting the fish back into water it could aid in a fish’s demise…but I have never known a fish hook itself to be considered a deadly weapon per se.

Sportsmen need to wake up and realize that these kooks (PETA, HSUS, Fund For Animals, etc.) are a serious threat.   Their irrational attitudes are enough to send a shiver up the spines of any serious sportsman who is aware of the detractors.   It never ceases to amaze me how people like this can champion causes so futile in nature when mankind has so many plights that deserve greater awareness and action.
